VIU Campus

Welcome to the Fall 2024 Semester

Message from the President
As we embark on another academic year at Vancouver Island University, I’m delighted to welcome back our returning students and employees, and to greet those joining us for the first time.
At VIU, you’ll find fresh perspectives, deep connections and mutual support. We are dedicated to helping you realize your full potential, and we are here to support you every step of the way, no matter where your journey takes you.
To our students – you will have countless opportunities throughout your educational experience to shape your future as leaders, innovators, and change-makers. I encourage you to embrace these defining moments – be curious, step outside your comfort zone, explore your passions, and engage with the clubs, groups, and activities on campus that resonate with you.
Our student services teams are committed to providing the resources and support you need to succeed. From academic advising and mental health resources to career counselling and peer mentoring, we are here to help you thrive. It is never too early to ask for help. For support, including counselling and wellness resources, visit the  VIU Counselling website.
To our exceptional faculty and staff, I am proud of your ongoing dedication to student success and excellence in teaching and learning. This year, we will continue to enhance our employee experience through various initiatives aimed at fostering a culture of engagement and growth. I encourage all employees to participate in the upcoming Employee Engagement Survey, as your feedback is essential in shaping a positive and dynamic workplace. Look for more details in your email over the coming weeks.
I am thrilled to announce that Shq’apthut: A Gathering Place will be reopening September 19. Shq’apthut (Building 170) is a home away from home for Indigenous students and houses the Elders-in-Residence program. It serves as a tangible demonstration of our commitment to honouring our Indigenous students, employees and communities. I know this will be a powerful place of ceremony, celebration, and healing rooted in Indigenous Knowledges. I encourage all students and staff to visit Shq’apthut. Please keep an eye out for enhanced learning opportunities and events in this new space.
We are a close-knit community that stands together and supports one another. As we embark on the Fall Semester, let’s embrace the opportunities ahead and continue to support each other on our shared journey. We have much to look forward to.
I wish you all a rewarding and transformative year.
Sincerely,
Deborah Saucier, Ph.D.
President and Vice-Chancellor
