Deficit mitigation plan progress

Vancouver Island University's deficit mitigation plan charts a path for the university to return to balanced annual budgets. The plan enables us to make the required changes in both academic and service units, as well as extensive analysis of business practices across all areas to find ways to become more efficient and effective. These efforts will allow us deliver on our commitment to “become a leader in learning for new generations.” VIU will also explore measures to increase revenues and remains
committed to inspiring people and place, and to our values of understanding, connection and commitment.

Deficit mitigation plan actions to date

  • Reduction of faculty overload for over-enrolled courses: $200,000
  • 2024-25 faculty retirements: $3,125,000
  • Parksville annual operations saving: $153,000
  • Staffing reductions to date: $1,031,487
  • Revision of administrative terms and conditions: $250,000
  • Program reductions: $817,000
  • Ending partnership with ElderCollege: $100,000
  • Closing The High School: $400,000
  • Cancelling fleet bus service: $100,000
