We are delighted to announce the opening of a four-week public engagement on A Different Kind of University: Vancouver Island University’s DRAFT 2021-2026 Strategic Plan. Please read the new draft plan and share your thoughts.

Between March-July 2020, some 1,000 people shared their thoughts about VIU, its strengths, and their visions for its future, captured in the What We Heard report. This draft builds on those conversations and invites you to contribute to making the plan even stronger. The engagement will be open from 2-27 November, 2020.

How the site works:

  • Register if you would like to read and comment on the Draft Plan. Proceed as a Guest if you would like to read only.
  • Read the new goals, objectives, and initiatives proposed for VIU's next five years.
  • Give your feedback wherever there are drop-down boxes. You can indicate your level of support for the proposals by voting, and you can share your thoughts in the comment boxes (publicly or privately). At any time, you can also always email
  • Return to the site throughout the engagement period to see what others have said, engage in the conversation, and change your vote or revise your comments.

On the final pages of the site, you will be able to see an anonymous profile of the contributors so far and a chart of the ideas with the broadest support. At the end of the engagement, participants who register will also receive a report of the consultation findings.

At the end of the four weeks, we’ll collect and reflect on the wisdom shared by our communities. VIU really is a different kind of university – the title of the plan – and wants to make an even bigger difference in the lives of the learners and communities we serve. We depend on you to make the plan even better.
