Provost Awards for Excellence in Teaching Design and Practice

The Teaching Design and Practice Awards formally recognize the excellence in achievements in all facets of teaching and student learning at Vancouver Island University. The awards focus on teaching design and practice of learning experiences for students which refers to how a faculty member designs, develops, and offers learning opportunities for students around discipline-specific learning outcomes.

Nomination Process

1. The Provost Office will circulate a notice about the awards and call for nominations. Nominations will be accepted between January 1 and February 15 of each year.

2. To assist faculty members and students in preparing a nomination submission for any of the ten awards, the Centre for Innovation and Excellence in Learning (CIEL) is available for information, resources and support in preparing the application package.

3. All application packages will be submitted in digital format and submitted to the Provost Office through teachingawards@viu.ca. The Provost Office will acknowledge receipt of packages via electronic Memo to Nominators, and will forward all packages in electronic format to the Selection Committee. Any additional information required on a candidate may be requested by the Teaching Design and Practice Awards Selection Committee from the Nominator(s).

4. The Teaching Design and Practice Awards Selection Committee will determine who in each award category is the successful applicant by March 15th and notify the Provost Office of decisions.

5. The Provost Office will notify Nominators, Recipient, Communications, Registrar’s Office, and relevant Dean/Assistant of Award Recipients. Successful candidates will be notified in writing by April 15th.

6. After receiving acknowledgement from the recipient, the Provost Office will make a formal announcement confirming the successful recipients.

7. The Provost Office and the Registrar’s Office will make arrangements for the recipient to be honoured at June convocation. Recipients will be honoured in a press release to the VIU Community, will receive their certificate at the June convocation ceremonies, and will be celebrated during a Teaching Awards dinner hosted by the President with the Provost and Vice-President Academic, the Associate Vice-President Academic Planning and Aboriginal Initiatives, recipients, nominators, and Deans from the recipients’ Faculties.
