CS04: Health and Safety

Draft CS04: Health and Safety replaces 41.09 Health and Safety Policy and its associated procedure.

About the policy

The purpose of this policy is to convey VIU’s commitment to providing a healthy and safe work and learning environment for our employees, contractors, students, and visitors; and, to ensure compliance with applicable health and safety legislation.

Consultation is open

Consultation on the draft policy is now open and members of the VIU community are invited to share their feedback. The consultation runs from January 13 until 4 pm on February 7. Input received during the community consultation will help inform changes to the proposed policy. Any feedback or submissions received after the consultation period concludes may not be reflected in the revised policy or in the consultation summary report.

Policy information

A board level policy meets the fiduciary responsibilities of the board to manage oversight of health and safety related risks and ensures compliance with applicable provincial and federal health and safety related legislation and regulations, including, but not limited to, the BC Workers Compensation Act.

The existing policy is very basic with an associated “Responsibility for Health and Safety” procedure. Health and Safety Services developed new draft material that was put into the Framework template. The “Responsibility for Health and Safety” document was decoupled from the policy because it is more of an operational document and to allow it to be updated more easily. An updated version has been developed by Health and Safety Services and will become a departmental document.
