VIU Campus

Frequently asked questions

Faculty amalgamation questions

Is VIU cutting programs?

No. Programs are not being eliminated as part of this restructuring. Students will continue their studies and complete their credentials without disruption.

Why is VIU reconfiguring its faculties?

To strengthen academic delivery, improve student experience and ensure long‑term institutional sustainability. The current eight‑faculty model creates duplication, inconsistent processes and barriers to collaboration.

What are the new faculties?

  • Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences
  • Faculty of Education and Access
  • Faculty of Management and Trades
  • Faculty of Science and Health

These are mergers of existing faculties, not new faculties.

Will my job change?

Most employees will see no change to their core duties. Some reporting lines and administrative structures will shift, but these will be clarified through transition planning. No layoffs are planned as a direct result of amalgamation.

How will this affect students?

Students will experience:

  • clearer program pathways
  • more interdisciplinary options
  • more consistent services
  • easier navigation across programs and departments

All current programs continue.

Is this restructuring financially motivated?

Financial sustainability is one factor, but the primary driver is academic strength and student success. The proposal emphasizes improved program delivery, clearer pathways and stronger interdisciplinary learning.

How were decisions made?

The proposal follows VIU’s established governance processes and is informed by:

  • 30 months of consultation
  • 150+ individual conversations
  • 25 Provost Circle sessions
  • Senate and Board approval

When will the new structure take effect?

Following Board approval:

  • Transition planning begins June 2026
  • Implementation targeted for Fall 2027
  • Refinement continues through 2027–28

Will faculty identities be lost?

No. Academic disciplines, programs, and communities remain intact. The new structure strengthens collaboration while preserving disciplinary identity.

How will this affect Senate representation?

Senate composition will adjust to reflect the new faculty structure, following the University Act and VIU bylaws. Academic voice remains central.

Will students need to change advisors or program requirements?

No. Students keep their advisors, program requirements and graduation pathways.

How will VIU support employees during the transition?

Through:

  • clear and timely updates
  • leadership briefings
  • FAQs
  • town halls and Provost Circle sessions
  • transition planning teams
